And if you don’t have that freedom, then you have not yet had your personal Pentecost. You have not met the risen Christ and received his power. This quote is found on page 54 of Half-Wits. Father Peter is giving a speech essentially about life and how each and every one of us can choose how to live it. There are two different states of living – the way Father Peter is living his life and the way Fitzsimmons, up until this point, has been living his life. Father Peter is living, as he says, â€Å"free from the burdens of life and the burdens of self† (54). He also says that his life has meaning and that he is a happy, joyful man (54). He has been rid of fear, despair, and anxiety all because of the â€Å"personal Pentecost† he refers to. Fitzsimmons, however, has not yet experienced that freedom or that personal Pentecost so he still experiences fear and despair, because of which he has allowed himself to become numb and had decided to close off from the world. Father Peter is different from Fitzsimmons because he has allowed himself to be open to the power of God. Father Peter realizes he is just a man. He has come to terms with the existence of evil and has turned himself over to God for help overcoming that evil. When he realized that God was the only one who could overcome the evils of the world and asked for his help, he became free from those evils and became a happier man. It isn’t until page 272 in the novel that Fitzsimmons truly experiences this: â€Å"†¦Fitzsimmons began to be aware of a tremendous sense of release. It was as if a great catharsis had taken place and all the weight of his past life had been lifted from him. He was, he knew, free of the burden of the deaths of Eileen and Sarah, and he was free of the foreboding that Sarz had caused him. He was also free, to some extent, he realized, of self.† This is where Fitzsimmons finally begins to experience his own personal Pentecost where he can be freed of all the burdens of his past, present, and future. The personal Pentecost can be achieved only once we realize God’s power and our need for his help. We learned that the divine trinity – the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit – creates, redeems, and sanctifies. Through this, we can experience trinification and be made members of the Body of Christ. In addition, the Holy Spirit moves us to repent, which is related to the personal Pentecost. When we taste the Father’s pain and submit to it, we are repenting and this is essentially what Fitzsimmons finally does. He has had a lot of pain and suffering in his life and it is only once he finally gives in and submits to it that he can experience true happiness. This kind of happiness is different from what he had before with Eileen, which he says himself was shallow. Prior to this transformation in him, Fitzsimmons was guilty of sloth, one of the deadly sins. As we also learned, sins are the expression of our desire to kill Christ. Once Fitzsimmons goes through his personal Pentecost and repents, he is forgiven for his sins and can now be free from his previous bur dens. That is the true meaning of this quote. â€Å"Hey, Jay,† he said excitedly, â€Å"Blessed are the half-wits, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.† The next quote relates to what we have learned about the Beatitudes. In this quote, Tommy is relating the half-wits to what the Beatitudes say about the meek, the poor, etc. They are similar because one would probably consider a meek or a poor person to be on the same level of happiness as a half-wit. It may often be the assumption that they could never experience what we consider to be happiness. However, the Beatitudes present us with a paradox, a challenge, and a timeliness that prove this fact to be wrong. The first thing we are confronted with is the paradox of the Beatitudes. A paradox is a seeming contradiction – the statements in the Beatitudes seem crazy, but they are true. Pinckaers discusses this on page 33 of The Pursuit of Happiness: â€Å"As for ourselves, don’t we honestly think that riches, joy, health, and a good reputation will make us happy? Don’t we spontaneously seek these things and reject their opposites?† The Beatitudes are actually the opposite of what society tells us we need to be happy. Ultimately, they force us to look inside ourselves and this is when we can find the bottom rock and realize our need for God. There is also a challenge in the Beatitudes. The challenge is this: many people are living their lives on cruise control, thinking they have it all. What both the Beatitudes and the events they discuss (poverty, tragedy, etc.) force us to do is stop and think and essentially reevaluate the way we are making sense. The Beatitudes confront us with the â€Å"realities of existence and show us what lies in our own depths† (Pinckaers, 35). In this confrontation, we are sent inward and challenged to find joy and find God even in the worst situations. It dares you to believe Jesus’ seeming paradox. The Beatitudes also have a timeliness about them. Poverty, meekness, and sadness – these are all things that speak to all people of all times. They are not problems of the present or the past; they are problems all people must face. Pinckaers refers to them as â€Å"questions which have constantly recurred throughout history† (37) and this is something that will always be true, so the Beatitudes will in turn always be true. In the reading of Half-wits, Fitzsimmons is someone who seems to epitomize the Beatitudes and Tommy may have been pointing him to this in his statement. Fitzsimmons was broken and forced to look within himself in order to find meaning in his life again. When he was with his first wife, the relationship was shallow – it was not true happiness. It was only once he lost it all and experienced many of the things mentioned in the Beatitudes the he was able to start to come to terms with the bottom rock and ultimately find true happiness. On page 147 in Half-wits, we see Fitzsimmons at his ultimate low when he seems to have lost everything: â€Å"I cannot put the events in sequence. The moment I saw the blood something happened to my mental process. Perhaps I went a little mad, or maybe it was shock†. For a long period after his trauma, Fitzsimmons was walking around numb. It is only once he lets down his guard and allows himself to experience the pain and deal with it that h e can truly start to live again and find the happiness the Beatitudes are talking about. In addition, he is now in a place where he can realize his need for God and the fact that thing most worth crying over would be losing our relationship with Him. â€Å"I had second thoughts,† she said. â€Å"I was wrong.† Fitzsimmons extended his arm; she came to him and clung to him. â€Å"Thank God for second thoughts,† he said. This quote relates to what we talked about the very first day of class. The bottom rock and making sense of our lives are foundations to moral theology and Christian thought. When we go about our daily lives, we are continuously making sense. We do things such as brush our teeth or our hair and all the while we are making sense. We learned that doing this presupposes the fact that it makes sense to begin with, so this points to something beyond us, independent of our mind and will, that our making sense must lean upon. This thing is the bottom rock. The â€Å"second thoughts† mentioned in this quote come in when something in our lives interrupts our making sense. Sometimes things in our lives happen that cause us to reevaluate the way we are â€Å"making sense† – this is the activity of ethics. For Fitzsimmons, his experiences with Sarz and Amy caused him to reevaluate the way he was making sense, or have a â€Å"second thought†. Amy also stopped to reevaluate the way she was making sense. The novel itself shows us four different people, two of which know the foundation of their lives (Father Peter and Sarz), and the other two who are unsure (Amy and Fitzsimmons). The second thoughts are necessary parts of life to further connect us with the bottom rock. Without this questioning, many of us would continue making sense of our lives in ways that didn’t make sense. While the terms charisma and transformational leadership have often been interchanged, Bass (1990) clarifies that charisma forms a part of transformational leadership. Within Bass’s approach, transformational leadership includes charisma (providing a vision and a sense of mission and raising follower’s self-expectations), intellectual stimulations (assisting employees emphasize rational solutions and challenge old assumptions), and individualized consideration (developing employees and coaching). Furthermore, Bass (1990) emphasized that transformational leadership also goes beyond transactional leadership (or contingent reward such as the exchange of rewards for efforts) in elevating leaders and helping followers achieve higher levels of organizational functioning. Hence with an increased level of interest in conceptual framework of transformational leadership, several studies have documented the benefits and importance of changing leadership styles. Koh et al. At the start, there was no human relations program in place. Managers undergo a three day seminar on labor law and complete a language course before going to Mexico. However, as human relations realize that language alone is not a barrier, the organization recognized the need for a specific training on cultural awareness and the effect of cultural differences on employee attitudes and performance. In response to the problems, a â€Å"cultural awareness† training program has been developed for managers prior to their relocation and assignment to Mexico. A series of trainings were developed for managers to understand how to work in different cultural environment and in how to handle human relations problems that may arise in the course of operations in Mexico. Top management has recommended the following goals for the training program design: (1) introducing managers to the cultural differences between the United States and Mexico, (2) presenting some typical problems American managers face in that company as well as solutions to the problems, and (3) reducing the amount of time needed to adapt to managing in Mexico. Top management has assigned the Human Resources staff members, and possibly using the services of external consultant, in conducting the training program. The value of the â€Å"cultural awareness† program in this case cannot be overemphasized. UMC’s move to set-up a subsidiary in Mexico only presents the increased internationalization and interpersonal cross-cultural contact within the company. In an effort to regain competitiveness in the global automotive industry, the need for UMC to develop the requisite skills in its employees to work within diverse cultures has become an important component in its strategy. Moreover, as UMC has created the LeaderMex program to expatriate leaders in order to build and integrate the technology and culture of the new subsidiary, UMC must provide support functions for expatriate leaders in the new subsidiary. As such, a number of studies advocate cross-cultural training as a means of facilitating the expatriate’s ability to adjust to the new environment (Brislin 1981; Landis and Brislin 1983; Mendenhall and Oddou 1986; Tung, 1987). The need for the support structures in training for the expatriate program can be seen in the cost of an expatriate assignment. According to the National Foreign Trade Council (NFTC) survey in 2002, a three year expatriate assignment for an employee with a $75,000 to $100,000 base salary costs an employer $1 million total. Moreover, the cost of a poor staffing decision could range from $200,000 to $1.2 million (the figure only includes identifiable costs associated with compensation, training, development, etc.), and the rate of expatriate failures[1] ranges from 10% to 45%. The cost of an expatriate assignment, therefore, demonstrates how measurement and evaluation of the assignments are crucial for companies. Understanding these key aspects of Mexico’s culture and history can go a long way in establishing good working relationships in the new environment. While the content of the training program should highlight and assess the US expatriates understanding of Mexican culture and history, the training program should undergo different phases in the process. Noe (2002) suggest that the training program should have three phases: Phase 1 involves the pre-departure training, Phase 2 involves the on-site training, and Phase 3 is on the repatriation training. The pre-departure training should involve employees learning the language and an orientation in the new country’s culture and customs. Noe (2002) suggest that the type of training most suitable would be language training, cultural awareness and sensitivity training, and daily living training. Language training can be conducted in a classroom type setting, videos, or an interactive learning through conversations. Cultural awareness and sensitivity training aims to familiarize expatriates with cultural attitudes, communication styles, and cultural assumptions of the community. It also introduces the expatriates on the core cultural values, bias, and stereotypes that visitors need to be aware of. Daily living training includes providing expatriates with information about schools, housing, recreation and sports, shopping, transportation, utilities, banking, and health care facilities in the country. The on-site training involves continued orientation to the host country and its customs and cultures through formal programs or through a mentoring relationship. The type of training suggested by the Bureau of National Affairs’ Human Resources Library includes continued language training, orientation, and mentoring. It is advisable that every employee sent overseas for training has a person who is responsible for well-being and is two levels above them in the corporation. That person is tasked with ensuring that the offshore employee is kept in the loop and comes home periodically for meetings or just to hang out. In addition, the continued orientation to the host country through a mentor both for the expatriate and his/her family is a must during the adjustment process. It is important to maintain an active communication and provide company newsletters to expatriates as well. The repatriation prepares employees for return to the home country. It aims to reduce stress level and anxiety when they return. It is important to continue mentoring in the process and to organize career planning discussions with the expatriate. Repatriation phase is important and valuable to the company as expatriates have been equip with a good understanding of the global marketplace having been immersed in the different market. Expatriates also bring a global vision to day-to-day company practices. More importantly, they can be crucial members of international task forces and if left â€Å"un-valued†, they can become significant assets to competitors. The three phases are important in the overall training-program design and maximizing the return on investment of training-program. In the end, outstanding global organizations will hire the outstanding local people in every business around the world. Freedom of speech is something that we all are able to exercise freely in the United States. The right to one’s own thoughts and their disposition is a fundamental human right. If they choose to share them, they also have the right to control the way in which they may be shared. In this way, intellectual property rights and free expression are inextricably linked. Perhaps the most essential right is that of communication. Without the freedom to communicate, other rights deteriorate. The right to communicate however is also exercised by providing a forum for those who have been denied a means to speak out on important issues. When told about the acts that occurred in Travers Hall, I was very upset that people would have the decency to deface school property and inflict some kind of hurt towards people. Although some people just look at this incident as nothing, it was clearly something. This is still an issue that needs to be addressed to the college students. The person(s) responsible for this act used it as a way to express themselves against the other ethnic backgrounds that live on campus. Since the first day of school, we have been constantly reminded of the topic of â€Å"Diversity†. When asked what the word â€Å"diversity† means, one can come up with many definitions. Some that come to mind are means different ethnicity, race, nationality or culture. It can also be illustrated as people with different thoughts and ideas, social status or economic/education levels or different religious backgrounds. Now with this in mind, why would people deface property with racial slurs and artwork? These people are absent-minded of the fact that there are many ethnic groups on campus. Everyone should be treated as equals, despite race, religion, sex, etc. Ignorance should not be tolerated. One way to try to prevent this from happening again would be to inform people of what has happened and the penalties that come with this offense. This should not and will not be tolerated. The people who were affected by all of this are afraid. These people should not have to fear for their lives when living here. Many discussions have been sparked on the topic of whether or not agriculture was beneficial or detrimental to human life. Hypothetically, agriculture, if cultivated correctly, will never allow any part of a group to go hungry. There is no stress about moving because every resource you need is in your back yard. Realistically, agriculture does cause a lot of issues. Problems such as increased population, non cooperative weather patterns, and territorial issues are just a few. Wars were sparked from overstepped territorial boundaries. Also, the creation of government was commenced as a result of hierarchy issues. Even though the issues on the surface can weigh down the positives, agriculture, at its core, has improved human lives and led to the development of the working/manageable lifestyles we have today. There are many issues that have sprung to the surface due to the subsistence strategy of agriculture. â€Å"Increased population densities†(Agriculture and Civilization) caused many problems with survival during empty seasons. As the population rose, more food had to be produced. During a good season, this was no problem, but during a dry season, this caused many problems. Instead of simply working 4-6 hours to find food, a full workday would have been needed. According to the article Agriculture and Civilization, â€Å"agriculture, to be successful, demands constant attention, good soil, good weather, and plentiful water. † As a farmer, many hours of the day was needed to make sure that the soil was rich with nutrients, turned correctly, and supplied with enough water so that the seeds would grow. The diets of agriculturalist was not necessarily as well rounded as a hunter-gatherers, pastoralist or industrialist.
